Sác - Sát experimental program

Sac Mangrove Jungle, Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City, was a key zone of herbicidal warfare during the Vietnam War. According to a finding on Nature magazine, the operation in Vietnam is the biggest chemical warfare in the world. From 1961 to 1971, with Ranch Hand Operation, the U.S military and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam sprayed 76,9 million litres of chemicals that contained 370 kilograms of dioxin over mountain and rural areas in South of Vietnam (Young, USA 2009). Herbicides, most of which is Agent Orange (AO) containing dioxin, had been sprayed repeatedly with high density to over 25,000 villages. During this spraying operation, there were 16 million Vietnamese living in the South of Vietnam. It is estimated that at least 2.1 and at most 4.8 million Vietnamese people exposed to dioxin to some extent (Stellman, Nature 2003).The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s reports have acknowledged that dioxin is a cancerous to human and has long been an international issue.
The war has been behind me for nearly 40 years, but it has never ceased to haunt me by the lives of my brothers and friends it poisoned or killed since they were children. Even the community around me and I will have health effects relating to this poison at various levels. Observing the Mangrove Jungle in Can Gio of 40 years ago when it was ravaged, and of now when it’s making a luxuriant recovery through its own filtration process, can give us a huge lesson on how to handle the outstanding issues regarding dioxin.
This artwork is within an enclosed space consisting of a 7-minute video about the peeling of tree’s barks, an installation of the sound of peeling recorded in Sac jungle, and an installation of trees’ barks brought from Sac jungle to the gallery and spread all over the room’s floor. The space is barely lit with blue light. This attempt of mine to construct such a space is meant to create a suffocating feeling and erase reality’s dimension. The room’s space only allows few people’s entrance one at a time, in order for them to deeply concentrate and feel the materials, as well as the historical implications.
