Cellar - Chín Hầm

“Cellar” is a land art work inspired by the 9 cells which captured political prisoners at the Thien Thai mountain foot in Hue. In 1954, under Ngo Dinh Diem regime, Ngo Dinh Can used this place to imprison Communists and Hue people who fought against the Ngo family’s nepotistic system. The work was done by digging 9 rectangle holes into the soil of the Red River’s middle plain in Hanoi, Vietnam. I made this work without removing completely the drawing techniques with traditional material that I was taught. Therefore, I chose to dig into the soil with a spade. The artwork would then be erased as the soil collapsed when the tide was high. This indicates that time and the transformation of nature is almost greater, lasts longer and can erase any ambitions of our human.
